Pike County Democratic Committee

OUR MISSION

To leverage universally accepted and historically proven Democratic principles, respecting and valuing differences among our fellow citizens and working together to perpetually identify, recruit, cultivate, inspire and support voters, volunteers and candidates for local, state and federal elected offices.

Message from our Chair

Hi, and welcome to the Pike County Democratic Committee (PCDC) website. I hope you visit here often. My name is Julius Litman and I am honored to serve as Chair of the PCDC.

As we welcome the New Year and enter full force the 2012 Election cycle we face five major challenges: first, to continue building our Democratic Committee and its effectiveness in Pike County.

This means, among other things, developing and sponsoring candidates to run locally in Pike County at the county, township, and borough levels; and of course, at the State level. We must then support these candidates by funding their campaigns and turning out to vote for them. This ongoing effort will be eased somewhat in 2012 given the strength of our Democratic candidates at the Federal and State levels.

Second, is the re-election of Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Given what we have already seen of the potential Republican candidates running against them, it is completely reasonable to expect a strong “win” in the effort to re-elect President Obama and Vice President Biden. And with the U.S. economy on the mend we can expect that the Republicans will double down on their campaigns of negative advertising based on the most scurrilous of lies and half-truths. We need only look at the manner in which the current crop of Republican presidential candidates treat each other to understand how they will treat the President and Vice President once the contest for the Presidency is joined.

Third, is the re-election of Senator Bob Casey. Though no strong Republican contender has yet emerged, it is reasonable to expect here too, that the Republicans will stop at no tactic, no matter how under-handed, to unseat Senator Casey.

Fourth is the defeat of Congressman Marino. The challenge here is formidable. The 10th Congressional District which includes Pike County has been extended by the Republican dominated State legislature into the very center of the State in an effort to protect Marino's seat. This makes not only for a very large, heterogeneous district geographically but also for a district which is inherently politically conservative. The challenge here is to support the Democrat who challenges the Republican incumbent, while showing Marino for what he is: a lackey of the Tea Party subservient to that rump party's basest, most nihilistic tendencies; and a candidate who has yet to answer for his shenanigans as U.S. Attorney and as Lycoming County District Attorney. We must hold Marino accountable to the promise he made to explain all.

Fifth is the defeat of Rosemary Brown. Here is yet another lackey of the Tea Party whose votes in the State Legislature have resulted in the loss of millions of dollars to Pike County's school districts. Before she does more harm as a Tea Partier we must defeat State Representative Brown, for the sake of our children’s education and to preserve the stellar nationwide reputations that our schools have achieved.

Last is our obligation to ourselves as Pike County Democrats to dispel the lies and half-truths which Republicans tell and in so doing to persuade independent, moderates, and other voters to vote with us for a strong, safe, prosperous nation securing for our children and our children's children the many blessings of peace and freedom which we now enjoy.

Julius Litman, Chair
